Busted the pile-up with a measured five watts, its 1000 miles a watt-QRP goal # 1, just had to snicker. 73 de Rob

  1. Tell me more? I mean, I know it's about radio, but that's all...

  2. QRP ( the old morsecode signal to reduce power) is an aspect of the hobby with the threshold of doing it right is completing at least 1000 miles of distance per watt of power, makes as much sense as collecting matchboxes

P33W is a contest station that had a lot of higher power stations trying to work it and I got heard through the mob, still making as much sense as collecting matchboxes....

  3. So do you actually talk, or just send "one, two, three..." kind of thing? And what is the power practical upper limit?

  4. It all depends, sometimes we can have protracted conversations and at other times the accepted minimum contact is one's call sign and a report of the quality of the other statons signal. Power limits are set by the amateur's country and liscense class with a typical maximum limit ranging fromm 200 to 1500 watts. Also the antenna type an add significant directional power to the signal. Voice, data and code are all used with the latter considered the most efficient.

Some, like me are interested in casual contacts (in my case trying for the most distance with minimum power), others like to collect confirmations (QSL cards), others contest and many a mix of interests.
Still makes no more sensee than collcting match boxes.
